How to Choose the Right Wall Thickness for PVC Well Casing Pipe

Sep.24.2026

How to Determine the Wall Thickness of PVC Well Casing Pipe

When selecting PVC well casing, a common question is: How thick should the pipe wall be for a certain well depth?

Well depth is important, but it cannot determine wall thickness by itself. The final selection should also consider pipe diameter, groundwater conditions, external pressure, geology, installation method, connection type and applicable standards.

Wall Thickness Cannot Be Determined by Well Depth Alone

Two wells with the same depth and casing diameter may still require different wall thicknesses.

For example, two 100 m wells may both use OD 140 mm PVC casing. One may have stable formation and a low groundwater level, while the other may have loose soil, high groundwater and cement grouting.

Although the depth is the same, the load acting on the casing can be very different.

Therefore, a simple rule such as:

100 m well = 7 mm wall thickness

is not technically reliable.

Well depth should be treated as one design factor, not the only basis for wall thickness selection.

What Factors Affect PVC Casing Wall Thickness?

The main factors include:

  • Pipe diameter – Wall thickness must always be considered together with outside diameter.
  • Groundwater and external pressure – Hydrostatic pressure, surrounding soil, gravel pack and grouting can all create external loads.
  • Geological conditions – Rock, sand, clay and loose formations provide different levels of support.
  • Installation method – Casing may be exposed to axial load, bending, impact or local pressure during installation.
  • Connection type – Threaded, flush-threaded and socket connections have different structural characteristics.

For this reason, PVC casing should be selected as a complete system rather than by wall thickness alone.

Standards Define Pipe Specifications, Not Well Depth

PVC well casing may be manufactured according to standards such as ASTM F480 or DIN 4925.

These standards define requirements for dimensions, materials, wall thickness, joints and performance. However, compliance with a standard does not automatically mean that a pipe is suitable for a specific well depth.

Two pipes made to the same standard may have different diameters, wall thicknesses or connection systems, resulting in different structural performance.

In simple terms:

The standard defines the pipe specification, while the project conditions determine which specification should be used.

5″ / DN125 PVC Well Casing — Wall Thickness by Well Depth

Outside Diameter Pipe Size Up to 80 m 80–250 m Up to 400 m
140.00–140.40 mm 5″ / DN125 5.20–6.00 mm 6.50–7.30 mm 8.00–9.00 mm

Example based on the same 5″ / DN125 PVC well casing size. Required wall thickness increases with the well depth category and should still be verified against actual project conditions.

What Information Is Needed Before Selecting Wall Thickness?

Before recommending a wall thickness, the following information should normally be confirmed:

  • Pipe outside diameter
  • Total well depth
  • Groundwater level
  • Borehole diameter
  • Geological conditions
  • Casing installation depth
  • Gravel packing or grouting
  • Connection type
  • Required standard

If only diameter and well depth are available, a preliminary recommendation may be possible, but the final specification should still be based on actual well conditions.
