ASTM F480 is specifically intended for thermoplastic well casing, while ASTM D1785 and ASTM D2241 are primarily PVC pressure-pipe standards. Understanding what each standard covers is essential before selecting pipes for a water well or borehole project.
ASTM F480 is specifically developed for thermoplastic water well casing pipes and couplings. It covers pipes manufactured in SDR dimensions, Schedule 40 and Schedule 80.
The standard establishes requirements for:

PVC casing conforming to ASTM F480 may be supplied with plain ends, belled ends or threaded connections. Flush-threaded joints are also included, particularly for groundwater monitoring wells where a smooth internal and external pipe profile is required.
The standard applies to water wells, groundwater monitoring, dewatering, recovery and leak-detection systems. Because it evaluates casing stiffness and connection performance, ASTM F480 is the most directly relevant American standard for PVC well casing applications.
ASTM D1785 specifies PVC pressure pipes manufactured in Schedule 40, Schedule 80 and Schedule 120 wall thickness series.
The standard regulates:
For the same nominal size, Schedule 80 normally has a thicker wall than Schedule 40, while Schedule 120 has an even heavier wall where available. However, the Schedule number is not a direct pressure rating. The actual pressure capacity changes according to pipe diameter, wall thickness, material and operating temperature.
ASTM D1785 is mainly a pressure-pipe standard used for water supply, irrigation and industrial piping. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 dimensions are also commonly found in PVC well casing. However, compliance with ASTM D1785 alone does not confirm that the pipe meets all casing-specific thread, joint and structural requirements of ASTM F480.
ASTM D2241 specifies PVC pressure-rated pipes manufactured according to the Standard Dimension Ratio, or SDR.
It includes requirements for:
SDR represents the relationship between pipe outside diameter and minimum wall thickness:
SDR = Outside Diameter ÷ Minimum Wall Thickness
A lower SDR value means a thicker pipe wall. For example, SDR 17 is thicker and generally has a higher pressure capacity than SDR 21 of the same outside diameter.
The SDR system maintains approximately the same diameter-to-wall-thickness ratio across different pipe sizes. Therefore, pipes made from the same PVC material and SDR series generally have the same pressure rating.
ASTM D2241 is widely used for water distribution and irrigation pipelines. SDR pipes may also be used as well casing when the casing design and local regulations permit. However, like ASTM D1785, it is primarily a pressure-pipe standard rather than a dedicated water well casing standard.
| Standard | What it mainly regulates | Dimension system | Primary application |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM F480 | Well casing, couplings, threads, stiffness and joint performance | SDR, SCH 40 and SCH 80 | Water wells and groundwater systems |
| ASTM D1785 | PVC pressure-pipe dimensions and pressure performance | SCH 40, 80 and 120 | Water, irrigation and industrial pressure piping |
| ASTM D2241 | PVC pressure rating based on diameter-to-wall ratio | SDR series | Water distribution and irrigation |
ASTM F480 focuses on whether the pipe and connection are suitable for well construction. ASTM D1785 and ASTM D2241 focus mainly on pipe dimensions and resistance to internal pressure.
A higher Schedule or lower SDR does not automatically mean that a pipe is suitable for every well depth. Well casing may be exposed to external groundwater pressure, soil movement, grouting pressure and installation loads, which are different from internal operating pressure.
Before selecting PVC well casing, buyers should confirm the required standard, outside diameter, wall thickness, Schedule or SDR, well depth, groundwater level, geological conditions, connection type and screen slot size.
For projects specifically requiring PVC water well casing, ASTM F480 should normally be the main reference. ASTM D1785 is relevant when Schedule dimensions are specified, while ASTM D2241 applies when the pipe is designed according to an SDR pressure series. The final choice should always be based on actual well conditions and engineering requirements.
